It would completely spoil GAM if I fitted a radio, the delete plate is still in place, there is no antenna and I'm certainly not going to cut holes for speakers. My solution is a Bluetooth receiver/amplifier so I can have some ICE (as well as SATNAV) from a cell phone.

I bought this little chap from that nice Mr Bazos, it arrived in the mail today:

I'll hide it completely out of sight somewhere under the dash and piggy back from the cigar lighter for power. The specification sheet says it should give 20wx2 at 12v supply, so I can use just one channel to power this (which I found in the spares box):

... which looks like the original mono speaker. It has continuity and about 1.5 ohms impedance. It fits into the little parcel shelf on the passenger's side:

... it would be incredibly neat if I can get this working tolerably well with the original speaker. The sound quality probably won't be much good, but that isn't the point :-).

Nice idea, certainly better than my computer speakers under the seats! More recently I have used one of these sat on top of the dash which also handily does the hands-free for the phone:

That single speaker came out of the chromed grille that I fitted to the rear parcel shelf. There is a knockout in the body which is still in place - all I wanted was something smart to hold the (warped) plywood backing of the parcel shelf in place, so didn't drill the knockout to fit the speaker itself.

Ah yes, we have an Anker speaker for around the house and garden - it is very good. I really wanted something that would power up on the motor car's accessory circuit - hence thinking the cigar lighter would be ideal (I have not checked yet but I assume it is only live with the ignition turned on).

I think you had mentioned about the mono speaker fitting in the chromed grille at the back, but it seems to fit the parcel shelf grille very well, and that makes the wiring even easier.

I think it should work, and will be an invisible solution. There is lots of spare room under the dash, so I was thinking of mounting a drop down cell phone cradle and a discrete USB charging point as well.

The Amazon is a gem.

Find a second speaker Alan and fit one in the front and one in the back to use both outputs of that little amp. Alternatively see if you can bridge the outputs for a single speaker.

I’ll see if I can get it working with the right hand channel tomorrow so I can make sure it will pair with my cell phone. I have a pair of small speakers that will be easy to hide away under the dash if the original doesn’t work well.

Just a note on Sikaflex-this is a Polyurethane based bonding adhesive as used for semi - permanent fixing a screen in place, it will have to be cut out on removal.
A flexible seal is probably better here (Butyl based) it will skin over but remains flexible etc.

A left hand drive parcel shelf thingy will also fit on a RHD car with a little tweaking around the steering column so you can also fit a speaker on the drivers side and have a extra shelf to store stuff for the driver.

One other mod you could consider if going for stereo is to cross-wire the speakers - left channel to right/front speaker and right channel to left/rear speaker. It was advocated in an American magazine way back when and I tried it in one of my cars as an (as it happened, enjoyable) experiment.

What's the purpose/premise of cross-wiring the speakers? :thinking:
