Low Power Steering Fluid level - Check yours!

I know that this has been picked up in another discussion thread, but felt this important enough to raise this as a new discussion.

It appears that there is an issue with low and leaking Power Steering fluid systems on the XC90s

After reading Fourier’s original ‘2011 Exec steering rack failure’ thread yesterday after retuning from a 30 mile motorway trip I immediately thought that I better check my Power Steering Fluid level.

It appears from first inspection that my Power Steering Fluid level is below the norm (see picture below) and the car has only done 2,700 miles!

I’m obviously very curious as to why the level is so low as I cannot see any immediate sign of leakage anywhere.

Has anyone else found their fluid levels low on their new XC90s?

As a result of your thread, I checked my PAS oil level. Barely reading on the dip stick. Thank you at least for the warning.

Bought a bottle4 of Castrol ATF fluid from Halfords and have topped up. Will monitor more closely and get dealer to check pipe unions etc at first 3 month service which is due first week January.

Again, thank you for the tip off.

Checked mine and I am also down on the add mark.

Is the basic Halfords stuff OK? - thought it would be specialist fluid?

I purchased the genuine Volvo stuff:
  • Volvo Power Steering Fluid 1 Litre - P/N 30741424

from http://www.volvopartshop.com/power-s...-oil-148-c.asp as I believe it is kind of specialized stuff.

There has to be a simple or technical explanation for this. I cannot imagine that all these new cars have a problem with low fluid levels. I'll be checking mine when I get back home though!

I had the option of buying Halfords as well as Castrol. My nearest Volvo dealer is over 1 hour away so as Castrol is a known brand, just went for that.

It's just coincidence that I checked my power steering fluid yesterday.
The fluid was just registering on the bottom of the stick.
I went to Halfords, but was unsure which type to buy, as the application book just said 'refer to manual'.
Might nip down to Harratts on way home from work.

has anyone with this issue spoken to their dealer, especially as it seems to be on very new models...

and I guess more importantly how do I check mine, had a very quick peek underneath bonnet could see coolant to the left hand side and what I assume is brake fluid at the back, but nothing else obvious?????
