Sounds like brakes are on while driving
 

Hi folks

When I drive slowly with windows down I can hear a metallic noise like the brakes are ever so lightly engaged - is this normal? I’ve not heard it before on previous cars. It goes away when I apply the brakes so it’s like the pads haven’t retracted enough from the discs.

Any ideas how to resolve? Fronts (JURID, new on car from Volvo when I bought it) are 10 months and about 8k miles old (discs and pads) and rear are 3 months old. Fronts also squeak just before coming to a standstill which is driving me mad!

Had the noise since before the rears were replaced so am convinced it’s only the fronts at fault. Thinking the front pads need to come out, clean, lube the pins etc and where the pads slide in the calipers, and anti squeal on pad rear.

I’ve also bought new springs for the calipers as old ones are rusty.

Am I on the right lines? Any guidance?! What lube/grease and where? Copper grease on pad rears?

I have a V60 D5 with the same noise. It is the rear pads ever so slightly touching the disks and becomes worse as the disc warms up and expands. I thought I was going crazy, however I hear it now on various V70 and V60 models with EPB (electronic parking brakes).

It could be that a small stone has lodged itself between the disc and pad. In which case the best way of rectifying is some ‘spirited’ braking / emergency braking on a quiet stretch of road from 40-60mph. Not to say this is definitely the issue that you have but surely worth a try nonetheless?

Toprivetguns - Thanks for the reply on my post re brakes. I did a search and found your original thread on your same experience. I’m going to remove wheels one by one and check which wheel(s) is the culprit. Presume you got nowhere with raising it at the dealers? My car is still under Selekt warranty so was thinking about booking it in. Or it’s due service in Sept so may raise then. Surely must be a fault I’m thinking - seems if rear that the EPB just isn’t retracting enough. My rears are genuine Volvo but may be irrelevant if it’s the EPB.

I visited various dealers with the issue (car covered under the selekt warranty) however I experienced no solution to the problem or further assistance to have it rectified.

I have inspected the calipers, EPB motors, pads and discs. After long journeys I can see a burnt glaze on the mating face of the pad which clearly proves its touching the disc. I have used my fluke thermal imaging camera to compare front and rear disc temperatures. Again the rear discs are far warmer than the front.

What I really need to do is compare the so called ''air gap'' with feeler gauges between various V60 models. TRW states the EPB motors should automatically adapt for brake wear, a feature I think isn't working on my car.

Interesting the issue is not solely confined to my vehicle. Very interested with what your dealer finds.

Pretty much as I expected the dealer says nothing is wrong and I probably had a stone trapped which is now gone. The pads are expected to touch the disc slightly, which I know, but in mine and your case Toprivetguns it seems to be way too much. Interested to know if anyone else with a similar year car is able to spin a wheel and share a vid of the noise?!!

The noise is such that I’d happily stick some old pads in if that fixed it!

Can’t think what else to do! Live with it I guess...
