Wheel bearings replacement

Hi Folks. How much is resonable to pay an indie to replace the offside wheel hub? (I understand nobody replace just the bearings). My v70 has got bad wheel bearings.

Dippydog Jan 21st, 2019 18:56

If you're talking about the front bearing then yes you have to buy the whole hub.A mate of mine changed my o/s hub/bearing on mine and I seem to recall it took half hour[ish].Be aware that there are two types[year dependant?]one where the drive shaft is held by a nut on the end and the other[later?]that has a bolt that screws into the end of the drive shaft.Easy enough to tell which yours has is to remove the wheel or centre cap[if an alloy wheel]or wheel cover/hub cap if steel.

I had mine done recently at local garage, I also had both shocks replaced so don't know precisely what the bearing cost on it's own, but I think the initial figure was about £130 for the bearing.

and as Dippydog says , there's more than one type of bearing, it took my guy's supplier three tries to bring the right one.

You'll need female torx bits to remove front hub.

The year for change is late 98 on.
The later style has a bolt going through hub which screws into the cv joint.
The earlier style has a large nut holding the cv joint on.
When you remove the wheel it will be obvious which type it is.
The difference is in the thickness of the hub flange as well, later type is thinner.

Love those instructions, "remove the brake rotor then unscrew the axle nut". What they don't tell you is that you need to employ the services of a silver-back gorilla and a 6ft breaker bar to get any movement on the axle nut whatsoever. Replacing the driver's side driveshaft on the 850, I broke a 4 ft breaker bar removing mine, and had to stand on the replacement bar whilst pulling down on the wheel arch to get it off.

Yeah it's the same with the Haynes manual...another problem I always have is the crank shaft pulley nut...

Try one of these.......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdppxKSz0xk

Expensive but worth every penny. Keep it in the boot for that unexpected flat

They can be purchased with or without new bolts.
I went for with, its good practice anyways, but I had one bolt seized so it was angle-grinder time.... So it was a good choice.
My mobile-mec did the deed, took about an hour, 35euros and a cuppa, job done.

That's mostly why I thought about doing it myself and quickly decided to let my friendly 'local' garage do the job for me, I wouldn't describe him a a gorilla but he's got the workshop with the lift and the impact driver etc etc.
