Yes, it's the PV. On way back from weekend trip stopped to fill up and as soon as i had come to a halt smoke started streaming out from under the bonnet. Still haven't figured out exactly haw and why it happened. Luckily there were extinguishers at hand and the fire was soon under control. It looked horrific at the time and i was visualization a write off.Close examination after I got home it would seem as if i got off lightly. I will need to lift out engine and strip the engine bay, and have that re painted, also the bonnet. new battery and air filters, re wire etc. Could have been a lot worse. It could have happened on the road miles from any where. I'M STILL ALIVE!

Crumbs. You got off lightly it seems. At speed, with the air to fan the flames, it could have been so much worse. Always carry an ‘in date’ fire extinguisher folks. I’d be interested in the likely cause.

I was reading in 'Classic Car Weekly" earlier today that the ethanol in today's petrol degrades older fuel pipes and can result in fuel leaks and subsequent fires. As your fire was in the engine bay, it is not impossible that this may have been the cause.

Looks like you caught it just in time. Are those the 12 volt converters with the burnt wiring? They couldn't be the cause, could they?

Is that a throttle linkage or metal bar running down under the battery positive cable. Looks like the battery cable shorted through that area? Was it rubbing there or cable tied in that area? Iain |

Once I get the car back into the garage I can do a proper investigation. Just waiting for two or three strong men to help me push it back into garage off drive where the recovery vehicle left it.

Either of these two areas seem to be the root of the fire although difficult to tell which was cause and which effect. The converters were on a fused circuit but the fuse was too high a rating, five instead of two amps.
