480es 1.7 88. starting problem and central locking

I have a real problem getting my 480 started, it turns over fine, very quick and smooth but just wont fire, when it finally fires it's now started hunting. new battery, plugs, cap and arm havent helped. was ok over christmas but struggled a couple of times on cold mornings.

The wires were broken off the vacume pressur valve, I fixed these but think this could have caused the hunting if the valve is'nt working as when i restrict the air pipe the hunting stops.

also, the central locking is not working.

any help is a help

Flywheel sensor

Possibly worth checking the flywheel sensor.

This will cause a non-start.

Hunting was often caused by the constant idle valve.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Hi

For the hunting, the Idle Control Valve would be my first port of call. It may well need a good clean out, and doing so can work wonders!

As Chris says, the flywheel sensor is another possible culprit - often the ends of these just need a good clean as well, if you take it off and look it can be covered in muck.

As for the central locking, assuming you have checked the fuse is OK, it is probably the switch inside the driver's door.

thanks guys,

idle valve off, going to try and clean it, also found the wires were all broken so got to sort them, had rhe tdc sensor out and cleaned that but still difficult to start, now had all electrical plugs off and cleaned them cars starting so now onto the idle valve, fingers crossed,

Sounds like good progress!

If the wires to the ICV are broken that is probably your culprit - one of mine broke completely on a previous 480 while I was driving it, and every time I went into neutral it revved up and down like mad trying to find an idle speed. It was pretty unnerving until I opened the bonnet and saw what had happened.

Good luck!
