Going from 15s to 17s, what tyre size?
 

Hi all, I've had a look around and seen a few different tyre sizes specced for 17 inch wheels but I'm unsure which would be best, I'm running the standard wheels which have 195/55/15 rubber on and from what I can work out using an online calculator the closest rolling radius wise for 17s would be 205/40, which would be handy as the wheels I plan to use already have 2 good tyres on in that size but they just look odd, i currently have the wheels on a little rover 25 and the tyres look so small even on that so they're going to look even more small on the v40.

I run 215/45/17 on my arcadias and adjusted my speedo for the correct reading.

They fill the arches best IMO.

If you want or need to fit new tyres, open your small light blue S40/V40 owners handbook and turn to page 110.

Most V40's can't use 17 inch anything, but some can, so you do need the correct version of the S40/V40 handbook (It's not a phase 1 vs 2 issue, as it seems to depend on the suspension type as much as the model).

If you use winter tyres on the continent, they must be 185/65/15's with 4mm of Min tread in some colder countries like Swizerland or Austria.
BUT the UK has an exemption from EU regs, so IF you use winters, then they can be either the OEM fit size (Often 195/60/15 for diesels), or 185/65/15.

Oddly enough you are allowed to use winter tyres all year, so some so called "All seasons", are in fact just winter tyres with a different name.

Cheers guys, and skyship, i don't have a handbook, but i do know for certain that any v40 can accommodate 17s, i suspect you're referring to the models that come with them as standard or not, if 17s will fit on a vauxhall nova (i did it back in the early 2000s) then they will go on a V40, 100%

215/45/17's fit phase 2's without to much of an issue,

Phase 1's might be rub as the archs are slightly smaller, might need to drop to 215/40/17's

Cars that had 17" rims also had rolled arches, so i am told.

In any case the wheels i have are going to be a total no go anyway i think as this is what they sit like on a rover 25, which has a standard offset near enough the same as a v40, so unless these volvos have ridiculously wide arches (which they dont) these are never going to fit, as pcd adaptors will add 15mm, not a chance in hell, they are outside the arch on the rover as it is!

I have advertised on a wheel swapping page several times for something 17 with the right PCD in return for these audi reps but not even a single reply yet, i live in hope as id take a straight swap for a scruffy (but straight) set of pretty much anything, dont even care if they are without tyres or kerbed as ill refurb them anyway.

How did you adjust your speedometer/how off do you think the readings are with 17's? I have 17s with 215/45/17 and haven't touched my speedo... Now I'm worried I'm going faster than I should be

Easy to check, go on a tyre speed calculator input your old size and you current size and a reading difference will be given. I changed to 16" from 15" but the profile difference meant they where the same! But my GPS tells me that 70mph indicated is 66.7, to do 70 on the GPS i need to do 73.:thumbs_up:
Oh and vida can tell the car what wheel and tyre size!
