V70 very inter power loss cured !!
This fault has been bugging me for a couple of years, it's been very intermittant & gives no fault codes : a sudden power loss in mostly second & third gear with no excess smoke from the exhaust. I think most of us are well aware of the weird & wonderful intermittant power losses caused by the fuel filter & the head scratching fault codes that arise from the fuel starvation; this next fault involves air starvation, hopefully this will help some people out:
The trusty D5 http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...0/DSCN1303.jpg Cover removed http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...0/DSCN1304.jpg The inlet pipe to the turbo is not easy to reach but I'm determined to leave the top engine mount & crossbar in place http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...0/DSCN1305.jpg The turbo creates quite a high localised vacuum in the inlet pipework, the rubber inlet pipe has denatured & gone very soft. Under heavy boost the vacuum is sufficient to squash the pipe & stop the airflow. My paws are quite big, it's a bit of a struggle. I end up laying on the engine but that's cool 'cos I love this car http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...0/DSCN1307.jpg Luckily the jubilee clamps are moveable, nearly there now http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...0/DSCN1309.jpg The vacuum has crushed the pipe so hard it's split. http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...0/DSCN1310.jpg Notice the pipe is so soft I can easily squash it into a ball http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...0/DSCN1311.jpg The new pipe is very hard & I struggled to get the crankcase ventilation spigot in for 15 minutes before I cheated & gave the plastic body a chamfer with the Dremmel http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...0/DSCN1315.jpg http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...0/DSCN1317.jpg Job done. It's been a bit of a tussle but I'm well pleased to have finally cured this fault, the car's never driven better. Also I've just got the all clear from a year long cancer scare. It's been a good day  pipe part No 30636854 |
Well done and good news on both counts!

Thanks HH,Only seen this post today,Its posts like this and folk like you who make VOC forumn worthwhile :)
Ps : out of curiousity how much was the part? |
The fact that the vacuum collapsed the weakened from oil pipe also shows that the engine would benefit from a larger air filter and pipework to the turbo ... In an ideal world there would be no vacuum at the turbo charger inlet ..

Nice one! I'll be checking mine ASAP. Good right up and well done on both counts:thumbs_up:.

Cant believe I missed your original post at the end of March as I thought I was diligent in reading diesel posts , just makes me think I have probably missed some other useful posts as well , great photos and well done beating the cancer . I had the turbo off my D5 looking for a reason for intermittant power loss over past 30k miles but no repeat at all since end of Jan but nothing done to repair except unplugging and reconnecting various sensors so I am inclined to think the original cause is still there , I did check the turbo pipes but I recall the inlet pipe being soft as you describe and thought that was normal ! I will get this changed asap and have a closer look for splits .
