2.5t to t5 engine swap help!!

Hi everyone glad to be part of the community and a new xc90 owner. I am installing an engine in my 2006 xc90 t5 2.5t. I was told to install a t5 not a 2.5t. I'm having trouble differentiating from the 2 engines. Someone told me I need to find a t5 from a 2002 t5 wagon. What model or engine code is the t5 engine I need that has more hp and torque than the 2.5t? Please help. Thank you

Hi, I can't help with engine codes but have you ascertained how easy it will be to get the T5 to run properly ( if at all ) with your existing Control Modules that are configured for a 2.5T?

The T5 is a lovely engine particularly the 2.4 rather than the earlier 2.3 so if it swaps over correctly it will be nice

So the 2.4t is a t5. I read it has a bigger bore bigger turbo more power than the 2.5t. A guy did it and he said it just needs tuned . I'm trying to find a write up on it and no luck yet

In the UK:-

The 2.5T engine is 2521 cc and produces 210 bhp and 320 nm torque

The early T5 engine is 2321cc and produces 250bhp and 330 nm torque

The later T5 engine from 2005 is 2400cc and produce 260 bhp and 350nm torque but at lower rpm than the earlier 2.3

From what I read they are direct bolt on if I go with the 2.3t instead of the 2.5t I just need to tune it. Is that correct?

S60D5-185 Feb 7th, 2019 20:11

What do you mean by tune it?

Adari8130 Feb 7th, 2019 20:13

An ecu tune to change the mapping of fueling and timing. The 2.3t has different ecu mapping then the 2.5t

S60D5-185 Feb 7th, 2019 20:15

Right, I see what you mean.

Physically the engines are very similar but the ECU mapping will as you say be different.

Is your existing 2.5T engine damaged? Why the change?

A loud knock that's why I'm changing it. I was looking for a xc90 and found one that needs a motor.

Ok:teeth_smile:

Keep us posted as to how it works out.

Hopefully you will end up with a nice car.

I think you are confused. A turbo with 5 cylindera doesn't mean it's a T5. T5 is a specific thing.

the 2.5T is designed with a low pressure turbo and the torque comes in a lot earlier than the high pressure T5 variants. Is it wise to put an engine in that develops boost so much later in a SUV?

I think I'm correct in saying the 2.3 T5 has a lower compression ratio and slightly different valve timing to enable it to safely handle more boost and more power.

It will probably run but the chances of it running really well are a lottery...

That wasn't my point. My point was the SUV is heavy and needs the power earlier to shift the mass. The T5 power comes in after you rag it.

I'm not disagreeing with you - my point is that difference will probably be made worse by having the wrong ECU.

You should probably stick with a 2.5T engine, as that engine produces instant torque from very low RPM, so is ideal for pulling around the very heavy XC90.

The 2.3 T5 engine, has a lot of turbo lag compared to the 2.5T
