Airbag light on

Good evening.

Just thought I'd join up here to ask for some help with an airbag light issue I am having.

I first noticed it a few months ago, after I somehow managed to get a broken rear drivers side door window. I didn't really notice anything before, but shortly after it was replaced, I noticed the airbag light was now on.

At this point, I should point out, the car doesn't get much use. It only has 68,000 miles on it, and only done 1000 miles in the 10 months.

Anyway, back to the airbag light. So I have a "cheap" scan tool, and so did a scan to see if I could reset the light. But there was no error code to reset. So I left it a while.

Then I was getting some suspension work done, and asked my local garage, who has a much more sophisticated system, obviously, if he could reset it. He couldn't see a code to reset either.

I then found a guide on here showing how to change the SRS module. At least it would help me locate it. So I thought maybe I could unplug it and replug it to see if that helped?

Or is this a case of a dodgy module, and need it replaced? If so, any idea where the best place to get a "new" one might be? Or is it simply a case of ebay?

Thanks

The rear window replacement, has nothing to do with the SRS light. The fact that you are not getting any codes, is rather odd. Check the SRS/Engine fuse in the driver's footwell. if fine, the only thing i can think off then, is that the SRS module is faulty. Only the Volvo VIDA DiCE will show the SRS-0001 faulty SRS module error code, if it is faulty.

New SRS module, (assuming you can find one), will be around £400-£500. Try to get a good second hand one from ebay. Just make sure its clear of codes and not faulty.

Alternatively, you can post me your SRS module and I can test it on my car and see if is ok

Thanks for the feedback.

I guess what might have happened is that after the smashed glass, I gave the car a good hoover out to get all the glass out. I may have disturbed the connections under the seats. So I'll have a look at that.

As for the scan, that is very kind of you. And I may take you up on that. Unfortunately the DICE user map doesn't seem to work anymore. However, conveniently, the last post on the thread is from someone with the software / hardware who actually lives local-ish to me. Inconveniently, I need 30 posts to PM him. I have posted in the thread asking to lift that limit. So I'll try him (/ her) first.

EDIT: If it was the connection under the seat, would reseating such connections cause the light to go out? Or will it definitely need a scan now?

Unfortunately, once any SRS component or connector is disturbed, the SRS light comes on and stays on, no matter what you do. Only a proper reset sorts out the issue. Only exception to this rule, is the drivers seatbelt which is also connected to the SRS module and when disconnected, it throws up a light, but upon connecting it back on, the SRS light goes off. Very odd if you ask me, but I have tested it on my car and another one, and both times I observed the same thing. The other connector under the seat is for the SIPS airbag and it tends to be the most common cause of the SRS light coming on. Anyway, hopefully you get hold of the forum member with the DICE and figure it out.

Should something be plugged into the grey connector under the seat? I've just checked everything, and it looks ok from what I can see. Apart from nothing being plugged in there. Is that maybe for heated seats (which my car doesn't have)?

What connector is it for the SRS?

Just a thought, whilst I don't think any of the 'basic' ie non Volvo-specific readers will pickup airbag codes, I did have a problem where the 1st reader I had would show some codes but not delete them - the second did both steps, however.

Here's the link.

Thanks for that.

The first reader you mention is VERY like the one I have.

I also have a BT EML type reader, I got it years ago, but never actually used it, so might give that a go and that Torque app you mentioned. While it might not see the airbag code, it might see if there are any other codes.

That being said, my mechanics fancy reader didn't see any codes either. Maybe my Volvo is in good shape apart form the airbag light, ha ha.

Thanks a lot for your help today. So looks like the dreaded SR-001 code for me. Booooooooo. So looks like I'll have to go for an ebay special now.

Thanks for all your help, and I'll post back once I have replaced the module.

Well. The replacement module arrived today, and thanks to @gatos excellent guide that I actually found, on facebook of all places, it was swapped out in a matter of minutes. This car being an auto meant it was slightly different, but really only very slightly.

So thanks to @gatos and @V8XCV for all your help.

Last night had a guy come look at the car, and loved it, so made an offer that we were both happy with (to be fair, it was simply the asking price), as long as I put an MOT on it. So that's booked in for Tuesday, then it'll be gone.

I'll be sad about that.

EDIT: I guess tagging doesn't work like that on here, ha ha.
