S40 Engine re-timing (Crank pulley sprocket No keyed)
I am replacing the timing belt in my S40 1.6 Petrol 2009 (Engine code B4164S3).
I found Crank pulley sprocket No keyed after the sprocket removed, (Not mentioned on VADIS). I realized the Crankshaft is not at the position it should be so I need to re-timing, since the sprocket I moved out no keyed in it. How can I position Crankshaft at TDC and lock it. locking pin 9997201. I'm struggling to find the location of the hole which allows the locking pin 9997201 to go in.(No any marks can be found while crankshaft sprockets moved out) How to make both camshafts turn to the positions that the tool Camshaft setting bar (9997151) can applied ti fix camshafts. (No any makrs can be found on camshaft sprockets and the TB cases) I would be grateful if you could advice how I can get out this. Many thanks. |
Looks like you lock via a pin from the rear. Though other guide only mentions flywheel counter hold tool? maybe there is only one position the flywheel hold tool locks in, and its the same engine position as pin? Diesel was a lot easier :teeth_smile:

Many thanks for your very useful info. When I was searching the tool 9997201 got the pin, this should be Special Tool: 999 7152 on your ducu. Do I need this tool 9997201 for holding Flywheel while I reset crankshaft at TDC in order to install timing belt? Now the TB is off, (imaging this situation is similar to "Time belt broken", Damage to the valves and pistons can occur), how can I avoid the damage while make the 2 Camshafts in collect position? |
I think the flywheel tool might be just to prevent the pin being bent whilst tightening the pulley bolt? Thats its job on the diesel engine. It appears in the turtorial linked above its also being used to set the crank position too? i can only assume on this engine the flywheel tool must only slot into the flywheel at the same point the locking pin does.
I think i see your dilemma, You mean you arent able to turn the crankshafts to the right position when a piston is at TDC? Id first rotate the crank so that no piston is at TDC. ie back off a little from the crank locking pin. Then set the camshaft positions, the camshaft tool should only fit when both camshafts are in correct orientation. Then bring the crankshaft back into position against the locking pin. You should google this yourself though, dont use me as a single source of info. Ive only limited experience on a few motorbikes and cars, and certainly not this engine. |

I dont see any washers listed on the parts page? I assumed it was a taper or friction fit. (Make sure it very clean if so) The sprocket wont move on the crank taper when the bolt is tightened if the belt is fitted and tensioned? The position of the sprocket on the taper is irrelevant if the crank is locked with the pin and cams locked with bar, just as long as the sprocket is in a position where the belt fits nicely? Assuming the flywheel tool is for counter holding only. You can get by without it by putting gearbox in high gear and jamming the brakes on with a piece of wood between pedal and seat. These are assumptions from looking at the documents only. Make sure it all makes sense in your head before proceeding. And turn it over by manually by hand before trying to start it so you know nothing going to hit. https://i.imgur.com/Kzt45ex.png |

Last night or early this morning, I have a post ready to submit and click preview and it gone, so I need to typein to post it again. Any suggestion/advice are very appreciated. (The white marks on photos below are made myself). My questions are 1. How can I recover the timing of cams and crankshaft while not any marks or how to align camshaft to crankshaft without any original marks. 2. In order to lock camshafts at right position, do I need to remove valvecover to use the tool 9997151 lock the camshafts. Is there another way to find what is the camshaft right positions?
