2010 auto gearbox vs 2003 auto gearbox
Hello
I’m brand new here! Though I’ve owned an XC90 for 3.5 years. I’ve just said good bye to my first one; 2003 car and replaced with a 2010 version. Essentially first one failed MOT and required a new sub frame due to corrosion. Anyway I’ve happily picked up a bargain 2010 version with 125k miles, fsh and excellent all round condition for £3700. Anyway my main query is; how does the 6 speed auto gearbox in my 2010 compare to my previous 2003 5 speed auto? The reason I ask is that I use my XC90 to tow my single axle caravan. My trusty old steed successfully took me and the family to France and back 2 years ago. However it wasn’t without some hiccups. After a prolonged drive I’d get a service transmission error warning and car dropped into limp mode. I understand this was a common issue due to the poor transmission cooling on these versions. I had gearbox serviced but issues would continue occasionally under load. What are the newer autos like? Should I expect to have similar issues or did they iron these problems out? I’m hoping to take the new one to France in summer. Anyway I love these cars, default choice to replace like with like, the missus won’t drive anything else and perfect for transporting our 4 offspring. And I’m used the running costs, I think the steering on the new one is a tad heavy so taking it into an independent Volvo specialist in Wirral soon for a health check, service and can belt / water pump replacement. All the best Matt |
Don’t change the water pump unless it’s not original Volvo.

The later 6 speed boxes fitted post 2006 are more reliable and a bit more driveable. Some of this is down to better software which makes more use of torque converter lockup and partial slip. It would be wise to get the trans fluid changed.
As said above, unless they are rough or have play, no need to change the water pump. If you must, use only genuine Volvo. |

In relation to heavy steering on my 2010 car. In peoples experience is it more likely to be a pump / fluid issue over a more costly rack issue? My displaced 2003 car also had very heavy steering but also was also notchy. The newer car is smooth but heavy particularly when stationary/ reversing.

Hi Tannaton, I'm not questioning the accuracy of this bit, just want a better understanding of it thanks. |
I’ve just called local gearbox specialist to book in for an oil change / flush. He mentioned they would need to check if it’s an Asin Warner or a Ford Power Shift gearbox fitted. Is there an easy way to check? And what’s likelihood I’ve got either one based on it being 2.4 D5 AWD 10 plate? Which one is the better box?

I don't believe they ever used the Ford Power Shift in the XC90 and with the exception of the T6 they were all Asin Warner.
