Unknown hole in head of B5254T on Volvo C70 2.5T

Hello.
Under the engine spark plug cover, there is a large hole with two small threaded holes close to it. When I bought my C70 the hole was empty and dry. I show this hole in the next photo. The photo dates back to 2012. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/attac...1&d=1556631658 In 2014 the water cooler started to have a small liquid leak. I should have immediately replaced the radiator, but I used it for another year and a half. Then the water loss from the radiator was increased. So I bought a new radiator and with the occasion I had the head gasket, distribution kit, other work replaced. However from that moment engine oil started to come out of that hole that was once dry. I show this hole in the next photo. And instead he "solved" the problem by plugging this hole, to my great disappointment. I haven't had engine oil leaks since then, and the car works great, but I don't know if this was the right solution. What is this hole for? I show this hole in the next photo. I would say whoever did the head job did not put any volvo sealer around the cam cover under where the hole is , If it is dry now they did a good repair which saves a big job of taking off the cam cover again . The hole is for equipment for other markets. It isn't a hole it should not go anywhere !

Now I understand. So he forgot to put the seal behind the hole? In the next photo you can see the back of the hole (surrounded in red).

Indeed , but it is not a seal as such but a smear of volvo liquid gasket .

The hole is for the optional secondary pulsed air system . A metal pipe is attached to it an blows fresh air into the the head. The lower half is different in this setup so that that the air reaches the exhaust gases and causes an "afterburn". The point is to heat up the catalytic converter faster so to improve the overall eimisions.
Normaly the hole is empty on cars with no PAIR system and no oil should come out of it. |

I had a new PVC kit installed and a new oil cap gasket installed. But from that hole the oil came out anyway. I believe that the oil leaked from that hole for a bad valve cover replacement by the mechanic, who then resolved with that nut shown in the photo.

USA was the main market. A few of the EU countries with stricter emissions laws got it. The SAS primary 9urpose was to decrease emissions at startup/cold by increasing exhaust gas temperature and bringing the catalytic converter up to operating temperature faster.

Presumably so that Trump who could have made a real difference to the levels of emissions on this soon to be destroyed planet could turn round and ask / say " who cares anyway "
