My First Volvo.
 

Hi all, I just bought myself a Volvo, and thought I'd join up for the advice and banter you lot offer. :thumbs_up:

It's the 2.4 S70 CD TURBO, and I got it from an old boy down the road.
It's been serviced every 8k miles on the dot, and is in almost perfect condition, with 11months test and no advisories, and the paint work is almost showroom.

The door cards need a little work, it seem's the leather is coming away on the back 2, but hopefully I can reglue it.

It also has a scuff on the front left bumper, but again, it's an easy fix.

The interior is in very good condition, and everything works as it should.

I am a very happy chappy. :kilt:

Now for the advice bit.
Is there anything I should check on the car?
Are there any common issues to look at?

The mechanic at work is going to service it for me on Monday for the princely sun of 12 bottles of Stella... can't complain on that score!

A few Cornwall/Devon area lads running around in S40's frequent the lounge area.
Re the car, the main thing is to ensure it has had a recent timing belt replacement, if not or your not sure have a new one fitted.
The door cards are too difficult to glue, the best bet is find replacements if they bother you, some have two lines of horizontal stitching to reinforce this area.
The '70's are very reliable and your model will have a nice bit of power.

Also for general "things to check" have a read of the buyer's guide, which is a sticky thread in the "Sales" section of this forum.

The S70 is an under-rated car, and one of the very best Volvos ever. All the quality, bags of space, a good DIY car, excellent all round. At 100k with a good history you really should have nothing much to worry about. Cam belt no more than £250, the other thing to check would be it's ETM history, but if it has an ETM chances are that its already been sorted.

Congratulations, you have picked one of the most comfortable and trouble free
car Volvo ever made. I had mine, 2.5T, since 2004. 10 years and 100k now with no major issues, this car keeps going effortlessly. It is a keeper.
The only issue they have is their flimsy disc brakes. I had to change mine three times during that period. They are quite expensive to buy and replace. The third
set were Bendix, a cheaper alternative, than the originals.

I had a look through the receipts, and the cam belt was changed 6k ago so that's a bonus!

I was looking at the door cards earlier, can I just peel back the plastic/leather/whatever it is and pop some glue in?

The front bumper has a scuff on both corners, but I have a guy coming next week to fix them for me.
£70 doesn't sound to bad to me for that.

The biggest problem, is the previous owner is aheavy smoker, and smoked in the car, so I need to spend some time scrubbing.
I don't smoke, and hate being in a car that has had people smoking in!

Apart from that, a good clean and she will be stunning.

The bumper fix sounds fine price wise to me

Re the doors, the section in question is foam backed and it's only partially coming away, some foam is stuck to the door panel frame while some is stuck to the rear of the covered section. It will end up a bigger mess I fear. I have seen images of folks using plastic type panel pins but that ends up moving the problem around the section.
Volvo did produce a repair kit but I've heard this is no longer available.

It's so annoying.
The rest of the car is great, but the door cards really let it down.
I'll have a play and try gluing it, if not, I'm going to have to try and track down replacements.
