Anyone replaced the tailgate lower weatherstrip?
My V70 weatherstrip as in the pic, is broken and peeling off at the ends, I have ordered one but after researching how to replace it seems some say it's only really doable with the window removed. Has anyone got any experience trying?
I will have a look at the scrapyard for a car to try it on but the chance of an 850/V70 being there are slim. A few said the pressure of sliding it in from one end means after about halfway it's likely to snap the metal and break. Another said he has replaced 2 but gave no useful info/tips. My other thought is of buying some U shaped rubber off ebay or the like and putting that in it's place but the strip is £26 and I don't want to pay just to not be able to fit it. cheers https://i.imgur.com/ieBpyHSl.jpg?1 |
Don't know how reliable this info is, but I did read on a couple of US based Volvo forums that the strip is actually just cosmetic trim and doesn't do anything - meaning its removal is perfectly safe, as is not replacing it.
With this in mind it would suggest that it can be removed without removing the window itself. Please do try and verify this for yourself however, as I can't seem to recall the specific forum (matthewsvolvosite or volvospeed maybe) that I saw the post on. |
If it's possible to knock the old one out, the new one should slide in, as the issue is the fact that the old one will have expanded somewhat with rust!

As Cookeh says, you can indeed remove it completely and just leave it without a strip - mine's like that and actually it looks quite good without that bit of trim. When I removed mine it was a bit of a fiddle as it had indeed rusted in quite tight, but with persistence and judicious use of a Stanley knife I got pretty much all of it out and it's been fine since. The trim doesn't do anything structural, it's purely "decorative", the glass itself is bonded in much like a windscreen is, I believe.

Shouldn't get caught if the wiper is in the right place. If yours is low enough to be on the trim then you need to adjust its position. Pull the black cap off, undo the nut beneath (think it's 12mm), and pull the wiper arm straight off the splines. You can then push it back onto the splines using them to re-position it correctly.

I replaced mine last year as the old one was split and the metal strip was exposed and rusting.
The hard part was removing the old one without damaging the paint or tailgate. It snapped numerous times and came out in pieces. If you have already brought the new strip you will see that it is u shaped and tuck up under the rear screen a small amount. I managed to slide the new one in without and damage or twisting the new trim. I think the key is to make sure the recess is really clean with no debris and lube up the new trim as much as possible and be patient whilst sliding it on from one end. Good luck |
On my old V70 I removed this strip, and didn't bother to replace it. It can only be cosmetic as my experience was that there were no adverse effects. The paintwork got ever so slightly damaged as I pulled out the old strip, so I simply bought a roll of pin-striping tape for £4 and positioned this along the edge of the hatch panel, hiding the damaged paint. The car was silver, as was the pin-stripe tape, not a perfect colour match, but it passed the 1 metre test!

On my 850R I replaced the trim after I thoroughly cleaned the recess and used loads of rubber grease on the trim. Quite easy really.
