740 GLE Auto on Ebay

I thought this looked interesting. It has just gained a new MOT, but it doesn't start, and the guy is selling it for his father ( aren't they all :) ). My guess is that it is just a minor electrical fault, and once again, I am tempted. I have to behave though as I have enouggh to get on with at the moment. It's in London, so I'm not sure what happens with Ulez if you are towing it with an "A" frame. |
Yes I saw that and if I hadn't just bought one a few months ago, I'd have been interested. Mine developed the non starting problem not long after I bought it. It was a crankshaft sensor and it's been fine since.

That takes me back, I had a D reg 740 GLE, a proper Volvo that was ultra reliable, and a proper estate. I'd love one to play with if I had space.

That's an interesting motor and would be well worth a punt if the price does'nt go stupid.
Yes, it's got some problems obvious and potential. Forgiving the B230E in an 'Oct reg 89/90 model year facelift before LH2.4 introduced in Jan '90; it appears to have been spec'ed with a lot of the then bells and whistles. Leather seats, sunroof, electric aerial etc. The parts alone are worth good money, just the VDO cluster (usual odo gear problem fixable) and mirrors to name a couple. A proper new headliner and probably sorting out the sunroof will be a bit of a cow! Bob :) |
My first estate in 2002 was a 1986 740GLE estate. Paid £425. D795 RJW. M47 B230K engine.
Red interior with cloth seats and manual sunroof and heated/ electric mirrors and front electric windows. Ended up fitting 240, virgo alloys and converting sunroof to electric from 940. Carb replaced with Weber manual choke version. pleased when a diesel 740 came in to the scrappers with the same red trim to replace all of the trim broken on my 740. Had the 740 for around 5 years. Way prefer the B230E as had that in a 240 GLT. James. |
An interesting MOT history. It's either not been anywhere for 12 years or the mileage counter hasn't been working.
