Wheel fitment 940.
 

Hi,
I'm sure this has been asked many times but having searched the forum I can find no definitive answers so here goes....
I understand that my standard 940 15" wheels are a 5 x 108 bolt pattern with an ET of 25mm and a centre bore of 65.1.
I've seen a set of wheels from a Jaguar that I fancy which are 5 x 108 and 65.1 but with an as yet unknown offset and are 17".
The question is are there any pitfalls I should be aware of ?
Any clearance issues likely ?

Hi Mark,

that sounds suspiciously like the Jag X-Type you've picked there in which case it is likely to have a very strange offset as it's AWD - here's a list of wheel fitments by PCD, if you click on the wheel fitments heading after finding a suitable suspect, you can check the centre bores, offset etc. Going to a larger bore isn't a problem, you can buy spigot rings on ebay no problem but go for the aluminium and not the plastic ones!

the X-Type wheels are 37-42 according to that list.
With 25mm spacers am I likely to get the arch filling appearance and wider track I'm after from those wheels ?

Probably but you'll almost certainly end up with problems with the front wheels fouling the arches and chassis on nowhere near full lock. Also there may be problems fouling the inside of the wing when the suspension is fully compressed.

You have to be really careful when using wheels designed for FWD/AWD on a RWD car and vice versa because of the offsets etc.

What wheels/tyres have you got at the moment and what about a Volvo wheel to fit instead?

No pitfalls, you just need to select the right spacers.

I was hoping that the extra width of the new wheel and tyre could be spread evenly through the arch if that makes sense, filling out the arch slightly and just a tad inside, say 20mm each way.
The wheels I have are bog standard steels with trims.
The way they tuck in so much, particularly on the rear, is almost comical.
My intention is to reduce the ride height by around 40mm, fit larger wheels, 16s or 17s and increase the track while doing so.
I've never had such a complicated time with wheels as with this model.

No tyres then? What size are they? What size are your tyres?

Yes, I've got tyres. I find they improve the ride immensely.
They are 185 65 15 and there are four of them.

Thanks for that! :D There's quite a few options from there, Volvo do 16 and 17" wheels, have a look at this pdf from Pg4 onwards.

On 16s, the normal replacement tyre will be 205/55/16, on 17s the closest is going to be something along the lines of 235/45/17 which is a little larger in diameter than you have but will make the speedo more accurate.

The good thing about using Volvo wheels is you know they'll fit and you won't have to faff about with spacers, hub-centric PCD hub adaptors or any of the other bo110cks involved with changing wheels.

Also, when you tell your insurers that you now have Volvo alloys on the car, they should say "No problem, thanks for letting us know" but if you told them you had Jag alloys and had to fit a hub-centric PCD adaptor to make them fit, they'll probably want an engineers report. :err: :swoon:

When i told my insurers i had a set of S/V40 alloys on my Sterling, they asked if they were the same size and why i'd changed them. I confirmed they were still 16s and the reason for changing was lack of availability of OE wheels and the originals were damaged by a tyre place. Their answer was no problem as long as i still had the same security nuts as originally on there. I assured them the same nuts went back on as were originally on there.

While I'm not averse to fitting OEM wheels the majority of those listed seem to have offsets of 43 which would require spacers anyway to prevent fouling, surely ? Others with offsets of 20 and a size of 15" with 185 profile tyres provide no discernible difference in appearance and performance.
Declared insurance mods are not a likely issue from past/current experience.
I just want a reasonably straightforward solution. I'm asking too much, aren't I ?
