Which? did a review and concluded that in petrol engines it does make a difference (which I'd expect as modern engines have knock sensors that will advance the ignition timing with higher octane/more knock resistant fuel), and for diesels it made doesn't make a difference (can't comment as I don't really know how the better quality affects a diesel...).
