The picture you posted doesn't look like it's a cover that would have been fitted to an '87. The plastic trims had the Volvo logo applied as a transparent sticker (in a shallow centre recess) until approx 1991, when it changed to being printed on, like yours.

The 'spokes' or vanes at the outer edge on the one in your picture also look a bit more sharply defined than others I've seen - any chance they are aftermarket (probably no longer available from Volvo).
Thanks for the information on the types of wheel trims. As Dan noted, I've confused the issue by using a generic photo of a wheel trim. You're correct in saying that the originals fitted to my '87 are different to the picture. The trim centres pop out and have spring retainers behind if I recall correctly.

I'm not looking to be period perfect or concours but would like it to look pretty much the same as it wouldn't be fair to the original owners wife (my mother in-law) as she has such fond memories of the car.

Maybe when she has departed I'll tear the rear axle out to put under a hotrod and perhaps cut the roof off to use the lovely big slab of metal on a Kustom

If I can source some decent 14" trims I'll get the wheels refurbished as it is the only feature that lets down the appearance of the car. Pic below of an existing trim. As you can see however the logo was applied it has all but dissappeared with time. All 4 are the same. She does recall it losing one trim and having a problem finding a replacement many years ago. I hear there is a Volvo breakers in the St Neots area, off the A1 so I may take a trip out there.
