The old 1.6ds were 16V. The new D2 is 8V due to emissions, torque and other bits and bobs. A diesel doesn't really need more than 2 valves per cylinder. They are mainly only required on petrols (non turbos especially).
The 1.6d has a chain AND a belt. Belt being between crank and exhaust cam. Chain between exhaust and inlet cam.
