A failing in tank pump would make it hard to start . The engine will start even with a completely failed pump if there is some residual pressure in the system . A failing in tank pump can go unoticed or intermittant for a long time until you get power loss and starting problems but these symptoms can be down to something else altogether . I agree try replacing the fuel filter , could also be an injector , I would get the codes checked first with DICE or VCT2000 . I think dirty fuel has been the main cause of in tank pump failures on my D5 as there is nothing but a gauze filter to protect it , the main fuel filter is after the pump . Is yours a Euro 3 or Euro 4 D5 ?
