I decided to remove the offending article ready for the replacement (mail order)
Before "attacking" the unit on the bellhousing I released(freed) the cable from its routing and disengaged the plug.
I noticed 2 things -
1) the cable had a cut lengthwise in the outer and first inner cable - obviously rubbing against the engine lifting eye I presume.
2) the plug had some minor corrosion on the female terminals.
I cleaned all connections, bound up the split(s)- reassembled and hey presto the engine ran perfectly.
