I know what you mean. Tried one of those Civic 'Type R's' a while back, and bu**er me you had to be 2 gears lower than normal (for the road speed) to get any useful urgency out of it.
The RX8 is the same. Very smooth but you need to have it over 5000rpm to get it going. Which means you need stupidly long stretches of road to get any pace from it.
Didn't like it.
