On a recent trip to Sweden, I had a Hertz rental V70 D2 (same engine, 1.6 litre, 4 cyl, 115 bhp) auto and that returned 56mpg! So I would not be surprised if you will see over 60mpg in the V40
Performance was more than ok in the V70 btw.
