It appears there are no engineers left capable of designing a belt tensioner anymore , all they have to do is use the volvo 240 or 850 type which were ultra high quality with needle roller fulcrum bearings with no plastic anywhere and lasted forever .[/QUOTE]

Thanks for this post. I've just phones my local dealer and fotunately mine's not one that should have recalled.

As regards the engineers' capability, it's probably more their lords and masters - the bean counters- who only allow them 2/6d for the subsequent manufacturing cost!
