I have an exhaust leak around the manifold, (gasket between head and manifold crumbling). The trouble is some of the studs and nuts are terribly corroded. I have bought a new set of studs, washers and nuts from Volvo as well as new gaskets. I think I will be able to remove what remains of the nuts and thus take off the manifold but what concerns me is removing the studs from the head. I have seen stud removers that grip the stud in conjunction with a socket set but has anyone used these and if so are there any tips to pass on ? My fear is that I will shear off the stud flush with the head.
Any advice please ?
