So I will admit that I am unsighted on what the difference is between a V6 diesel and a Straight Six one. But I know someone on this forum can enlighten me, in simple speak please.

More generally, where does one settle as manufacturers are always trailing new models, facelifts and revised engine options? On the basis that almost 80% of the car has new components I guess it might be a blessing that the engine is tried and tested? Who knows as there's plenty to go wrong with almost everything else!

As for Volvo..... Well I have tried the four cylinder unit and its alright but my previous experience of the D5 has been one of the initial reasons for sending me away from buying another Volvo. I do think the reliance on exclusively 4cyl units is too narrow for a company operating alongside the other premium brands. There is no doubt that the Ingenium JLR engine will be the biggest seller in the F-Pace with a forecast of about 70% but that still leaves 30% who want something other than extra turbos and chips to tease out the joy of the engine.

If I had a ceiling of £40k approx available for my next car then the F-Pace with the smaller engine would be under serious consideration, for sure. I would happily accept the performance and soundtrack as the overall package is stunning. If there's some more pennies in the budget and one enjoys the thrill of a V6 then I would personally view this as icing on the cake, certainly not essential by any means.

Roll on Saturday.
