NO its not a good thing, because you wont know if there's a fault needing sorted out. I expect the lamp has failed, to replace it you have to remove the top of the dash and unclip the instrument panel, then replace the dud bulb, seek advice elswhere if you have a passenger airbag fitted. (assemble in reverse order!!) The bulb is a 1.2 watt with a plastic bayonet cap Number 286 WITH A CAP there is a capless version as well. I think that if you have long thin double jointed arms and wrists you may be able to reach up from the footwell but its a bit tricky/virtually impossible!!

The indicator should be in the bottom right window below the ABS and to the right of the Lambda light. Unless the location is different from that on a Tdi.
