My engine blew -
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=258608 - another story.
So I ordered a replacement engine from ACD Volvo Breakers after they assured me they checked it out and it would fit. It's taken the garage who are fitting the engine a while to work out why it would start but not properly... everything on the outside looks the same. It turns out the camshaft I had in the
original engine superseded the one in the replacement engine (i.e. original was
newer).
My
original shaft has part number 31216227
The
replacement shaft has part number
30731132

Unfortunately the originals were damaged by the blown engine, so we can't lift them out and replace the older ones. The only available 31216227's are in Sweden (5d lead time), £373.20 each.
I'm no engine guru so not sure the exact reason this won't work but it doesn't work properly (the engine runs but it doesn't start easily?). Can anyone comment on these questions:
- What would your approach be to the breaker and what would you expect from them?
- Can Volvo reprogram my ECU to accept the replacement engine with its camshafts, or is that not possible?
- Is there a solution I'm not thinking of, other than replaceing the cams? The garage has expressed that removing the engine is going to take a much longer time than replacing them.
I have been unable to speak to ACD today but have emailed them the issue and asked them if they can supply the camshafts free of charge as it was their error. Hmmmm.
Beginning to believe that Volvo is my Friday 13th.
