I'm sorry to resurrect this thread, with a few hundred views I thought I'd update what happened.

Basically, I got a local auto electrician in and he ran a new wire from the relay to a fuse after getting the instrument panel out etc.

He just 'placed' the wire into the fuse so I could remove it should I want it to be done more comprehensively at a later date. 1 year later and it's still working fine.
