Anyone had any experience with owning a triumph? My wife likes them and being a British company appeals to me- don't know why, hasn't bothered me in the past. I keep hearing the same "nice bikes.......but" etc and internet is full of reliability stories.

I had a year 2000 Speed Triple 955i about 10 years ago for about 2 years & it was no less reliable than a Japanese bike, of which I've owned quite a few. The only thing I can comment is that if you're used to Japanese bikes the Triumph engines are more mechanically noisy, or at least the Speed Triple engine is.
