Got the bearing caps off a similar age model and am aware they are original to each head but thought it was worth a go. Fitted them with the replacement cam i sourced and it runs nice and smooth. Once thing i did find is that after the first couple of times it struggled to start since replacing the cam, until i realised the replacement cam i bought did not have the additional lobe that the cam position sensor detects!! Doh!
So all apart again and rebuilt with the original cam which i didnt know whether had been damaged by the initial impact but now back together and running really nice and smooth with plenty of power.
Now done over 700miles since rebuild and getting 45mpg (according to computer) so fingers crossed it gives me a few more miles.
