When my 2007 has exactly the same symptoms (2 litres of oil in 400 miles) and eventually a full soot filter I disconnected the PCV and ran it to a catch tank whilst blanking off the manifold end.
This made no difference to the oil consumption at all and it was still chugging out blue smoke clouds when accelerating from the overrun.
I think in Osullivants case the PCV was a contributor to the problem but the main issue was the piston rings. Volvo and an independent all diagnosed worn/faulty piston rings.
I would try changing the PCV first as it’s so cheap but be prepared for it not to cure the problem completely.
