The way it happened was that i tried to use the wipers (when I first bought the car) when the windscreen was iced up. One wiper stripped immediately but on getting some replacements they worked fine as it was only the arm that stripped not the (probably much harder metal) stub you bolt it to.

I have seen it posted, it was re 240s, that Volvo wiper arms have an unusual strength of spring, which work best with Volvo wiper blades. This might apply also to your car?
