At first I thought it was the headlight leveling motor (which I probably broke when cleaning the lens) but when I popped the bonnet there was no doubt what was making the noise. The brake vacuum pump was whining, vibrating & a little warm. I felt it, tapped it a bit, swore at it & turned back to get my tools from the house when it stopped.

I've left it for now. Is this normal behaviour ??

Cheers.

No its not, the pump has probably worn itself out by now , it runs for a few seconds to build up vacuum in the brakes then stops , There could be an air leak or the brown control switch faulty in the brake servo hose .
