I believe that started in the USA Ash - if memory serves correctly, pick ups (utes) were exempt from the emissions kit hung on most passenger cars that depowered them horrifically. That means the Americans found ways of boosting the power in their pick ups and held contests to find the quickest. Sadly this has resulted in this trend :
