Has your car ever suffered a leaking windscreen?
Could there be corrosion at the CEM wiring connector.
For me, knowing how fickle canbus systems are to voltage drop/resistance I would go through every connector block, one at a time checking for corrosion and/or loose connections, taking it for a drive after each and every one.
I'd start with the CEM then onto the accelerator pedal sensor, fuel pump connector, maf sensor, throttle body, egr and so on.
After that I think as you say it may be time to consult a Volvo specialist.
