It is beginning to look as though your original suspicion is correct (just a badge engineering job). I may be wrong, but I think any work carried out by a Volvo dealership is stored on a data base accessible by dealers nationwide. On that premise, and as only official dealers and service centres are able to install Polestar there would be a record. Technicians would be able to see if it did have the upgrade when they hook the car up for servicing, which really brings us full circle, as the drive mode would have changed.
