I asked the guy at official Volvo dealership/service here about that, and promptly he said to me: come here, take a look...
There were 5-6 xc60's parked in the parking lot, he went to each one, with me in tow, and pressed to each of their bonnets - they all did the same.
He said it's by design, it absorbs a significant part of energy on pedestrian impact. So I was convinced.
