The car is a 2005 model but only has 37k on the clock with a full Volvo dealer service history. The previous owner got any work that was needed done so I would be surprised if it was anything major failing. It sailed through the last MOT with no advisories so can probably rule out quite a lot there.
Any suggestions? I'd really love to be able to narrow it down so if I need to take it to a garage, they don't need to spend too much time (or my money!) fault finding.

Edit: Could the anti roll bar drop links make this sort of noise if they are worn out?

I'd suspect the drop links... they can make a metal on metal noise when badly worn. Replace in pairs & buy ones manufactured by a well known brand, otherwise they'll fail again in no time.

Easy enough to check them too. If they're badly worn, you'll be able to shake them by hand. Check the rubber boots for splits, as they need replacing if the boots are split & there's no movement anyway.
