I think it's more likely a engine failure that might have sounded like a downshift due to the noise, which then caused the smoke and subsequent power loss.

The 6 speed manual box is just that - no electronics, it cannot command a downshift on its own without the selectors being physically moved. By the same token - I don't believe it has an ECU to interrogate.
