There's only one sport mode, but I get that you mean manual selection of 5th gear.
Anyway, when left in D the gearbox will shift up and down as needed to make sure you have the torque you need when needed, and then run on a gear as high as possible when the load is light and the speed is right.
That's usually more economical than selecting a gear that sometimes is unnecessary low.
Since a correctly maintained gearbox shifts gears almost unnoticeably, there's not much penalty for having the optimal gear most of the time. It's different if you are towing something heavy.
