The service message is triggered after a certain distance driven, or a certain time, whichever comes first. Back in the 850 series it was also after a certain number of engine running hours, but I don't know if they still have that parameter too.

When I cleared mine, it didn’t come back on for maybe 4 months, until it was serviced. Then reset again I suppose
