For the two cars we have, an XC70 D5 from 2012 and an XC70 D4 from 2016, the service indicator is triggered after 12 months or 30000 km, whichever comes first. That's it. No sorcery, no other events counted, no magic.
The later one even shows in the display how much time and distance you have remaining.
