Assuming this is the 960 white-block that his other thread is about. The timing belt change is not quite as straightforward as on a red-block - twin cam for starters. The engine is interference as well so personally I chickened out of doing it myself and got my local garage to do it.
I don't think there is any particular need to do the water pump as well if it's not leaking or noisy. However it is driven by the timing belt so I guess it all depends whether you have more faith in an original Volvo one or a modern replacement.
You need some kind of tool to operate the serpentine belt tensioner. Unless it has been replaced with an aftermarket one the original is too large for a 1/2" and too small for a 3/4". I suppose you could stuff something else in to make a 1/2" breaker bar work if you're desperate.
