Especially later models are programmed to try to minimize fuel consumption. One of the actions is to hold on to a higher gear sometimes a bit too long.
When it's cold outside it allows more lockup release, to keep the oil in the gearbox warm.
My 2012 occasionally stays in a gear all the way down to 1000 r/min. That I do notice too.
