So is wax oil a "no no" then? That forms a thick rubber like coating when it dries.

I'm not sure if that's true. I don't think Volvo's in Japan have the same level of rust protection applied from the factory... they don't need it in climates like Japan where its hot. They don't even use road salt there, or very little of it. I've heard some of the roads are even heated!

The issue is the imported car in a UK winter. I know we have very mild winter's compared to places like Canada, but still, our roads are usually heavily salted. That will have an affect on a car that's never been susceptible to it.
