Yes it might be the airbag unit, it certainly sounds large and heavy and the fan off/on makes no difference.
Getting the glovebox out is a bugger because of the plastic straps that retain the lid - you can't extract them like the Haynes manual says without breaking them, so I dismantled the inside of the lid to push them out which was another bugger.
I'm going to find out how much the plastic thingys are and if necessary cut the old ones free.
If nothing gets in the way of your arrival, I'll set the 14th aside for the job.
