I have been looking at these marks for years but cant remember any confusion about the correct one , could you post a photo?
To be precise there is a VOLVO locking pin that goes in a hole in the block behind the starter motor , that locates the crank in exactly the right position which should correspond to the marks on the pulley/casing...
