Default Carwash gearstick water fountain hell...what happened!?!

Hi all,
I took my Torslanda through a carwash yesterday and the most bizarre thing happened...as the wash cycle started, the underbody wash kicked in and suddenly my gearknob gaiter swelled up like a balloon and started spraying water out of the top like some sort of lawn sprinkler/fountain/pressure washer!

I sat there for what seemed like an eternity, grasping the top of the gaiter to try to stem the flow whilst getting absolutely soaked to the skin

Thankfully it eventually stopped and the rest of the wash carried on without incident. I've been airing it since and thankfully it's nearly dry inside now!

Any ideas as to what the heck went on? Is there a missing sprayguard somewhere? If I remove the gaiter I can see through to the road via the hatch for the gearstick. Is this normal? I've never had such a thing happen to me in all my born days, I felt like an extra in Gray Lady Down!!!
